Angelo E. Gousse, M.D.Angelo E. Gousse, M.D. joined the urology faculty at the University of Miami in 1998 to head the Division of Female Urology and has established a state-of-the art female urology and bladder control program. This program features advances in surgical and nonsurgical treatment of urinary incontinence, overactive bladder, and painful bladder syndrome in both men and women, with treatment options that include Biofeedback, pelvic floor rehabilitation, and electrical stimulation and modulation of the sacral nerves using an implantable prosthetic device, Interstim.
In addition, Gousse specializes in vaginal anti-incontinence and pelvic floor prolapse surgery as well as urethral reconstruction for urethral stricture disease. For the treatment of post-prostatectomy urinary incontinence, he uses state-of-the-art diagnostic and surgical treatments, including insertion of the artificial urinary sphincter (AUS). Gousse serves as the urologist in charge of the Miami Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VA) Spinal Cord Unit and as Director of the VA’s Urodynamics Laboratory.
Research: Funded by a grant from the South Florida Kidney Foundation, Gousse is investigating the role of increased urine output on changes in bladder function in the diabetic patient. His other research includes examining 1) MRI as a diagnostic tool for understanding the anatomical basis of female pelvic floor prolapse; 2) the current treatment guidelines and outcome measures in the management of spinal cord patients; 3) the investigation, along with Dr. Vinata Lokeshwar, of urinary markers for interstitial cystitis (IC), a devastating urinary condition that affects more than a million patients (mostly female), in the United States; and 4) the newest non-surgical treatments for bladder control problems, like Botulinum-A toxin (Botox) to treat overactive bladder
