BILL MOYERS JOURNAL “Buying the War” Wednesday, April 25, 2007, 9:00-10:30 p.m. ET In the lead-up to the invasion of Iraq, the government’s claims about weapons of mass destruction and terrorist ties to Saddam Hussein went mostly unchallenged by the media. Four years after “shock and awe,” how the government sold the war has been much examined, but a big question remains: how and why did the press buy it? Bill Moyers and his team piece together the reporting that shows how the media were complicit in shaping the “public mind” toward the war, and ask what’s happened to the press’ role as skeptical “watchdog” over government power.
Bill Moyers has put together an amazing 90-minute video documenting the lies that the Bush administration told to sell the Iraq war to the American public, with a special focus on how the media led the charge.

While a great many pundits, not to mention presidents,
look remarkably stupid or dishonest in the four-year-old clips included
in "Buying the War," it's hard to take any spiteful pleasure in holding
them to account, and not just because the killing and dying they facilitated
is ongoing, but also because of what this video reveals about the mindset
of members of the DC media. Moyers interviews media personalities, including
Dan Rather, who clearly both understand what the media did wrong and are
unable to really see it as having been wrong or avoidable.
The Bush administration marketed and sold the war in Iraq to the American people. How and why did the press buy it, and what does that say about the role of journalists in helping the public sort out fact from propaganda? In this program, veteran journalist Bill Moyers and his investigative team piece together the reporting and political spin that shaped the public mind prior to, during, and following the 2003 invasion. Exposing the disappearance of a watchdog mentality in mainstream newspaper and TV journalism, the documentary also highlights the work of intrepid Knight Ridder reporters who dug beneath the surface of administration claims — only to be drowned out by the drums of war. Further insight comes from journalists Dan Rather, former anchor of CBS Evening News; Tim Russert of NBC’s Meet the Press; Bob Simon of 60 Minutes; and Walter Isaacson, former chairman of CNN. (90 minutes)
